My first-born turns seventeen

reg

His friends call him Reg.

His dad calls him Gie’.

His middle brother nicknames him The Jazzman.

His youngest brother teases him Kuya Wedgie.

He’s just plain sweet ol’ Reggie to me.

He’s usually quiet and has this reserved disposition but once in a while he will surprise us with his goofiness.  He’s a responsible young man and I can rely on him to look after his brothers.  Although sometimes he also gets ticked off when they tease him a lot.

He turns 17 tomorrow.  How time flies. It seems not too long ago when I heard his first cry and was helpless as I held him in my arms.  He now towers above me and has a mind of his own.  He’s going to university next Fall and he wants to be a jazz flutist.  I support his dreams although I had negative feelings about it at first.  I was worried about the instability of a music career and the rejection that he might experience.  But I realized that rejection is a part of life and that’s how we learn, from our failures.  And who am I to hinder his dreams?  As a parent, I am here to encourage him to pursue his dreams.

You can read more about Reggie’s dream in He is an explorer of music and …

And also the story of his birth in “A Special Surprise” – A Labour of Love.

reg17d.jpg

And speaking of labour – I slaved away in the kitchen last night and this morning trying to prepare a feast for 15 people for his birthday celebration.  And that was only my family and my sister’s family and my mother.  It’s not that much food but it has been a lot of work.  I usually order food for birthday celebrations but money’s kind of tight right now and I decided to prepare everything myself.  I have not been confident enough before to serve my dishes to other people.  As I have mentioned several times before, my husband is a better cook than I am.  But he wouldn’t cook on occasions like this and I guess, I am not that bad after all.  I cooked the pancit (fried noodles), lemon chicken and lumpia (egg rolls).  I bought the ice cream cake from Dairy Queen.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Reggie! My eldest is of the same age. Ah, children, they grow so fast!

Niceheart, it’s a labour of love. Nothing can beat your hardwork in the kitchen. Anything for the family, ganyan ang mga mommy. 🙂

Reggie’s lucky to have a mum like you. Understanding and encouraging. It’s not always easy for parents to be able to come to terms with their own feelings about their children’s dreams, especially if it’s not something they thought about in the first place.

Happy birthday, Reggie! Time really does fly, doesn’t it? And as much as we worry about the choices our children make, we need to learn that they are coming into adulthood. I just don’t know if I can let go when my turn comes.

And good going on the cooking there. I’d freak out if I had to cook for so many people.

my brother also was a music major in college. he played saxophone and was a big jazz fan, too (Coltrane, Miles, Joshua Redman, etc). But he also studied science and ended up going to medical school. I suppose my bro studied science as a backup.

good luck to your son. cheers.

    happy birthday to reggie!
sa u of m– school of music ba siya papasok miss niceheart?
not a lot of parents (especially a lot of filipino parents here who only seem to want their children to be nurses or doctors) can be as supportive if their kid wants to pursue a music degree. he’s lucky to have you 🙂 .

Hey happy belated birthday to Jazzman ! You did a great job niceheart co’z you prepared and slaved yourself in the kitchen and that is a beautiful gift to your son! Normally teen agers prefer to go out partying di ba but family gathering is always the best ! 😉

I’m sure that there is a future in music, it’s just a matter of believing in him ! Who knows he will be a great Jazz player ! Tell Reggie to hold on, keep the faith, follow his dreams and never give up 🙂

Happy Birthday to Reggie! The food looks great – I will eat vicariously through your lumpia and pancit. You’re a great mom, to be supportive of Reggie’s dream. It takes courage for one to pursue what they love, but I think it’s better in the long run.

Thank you, ipanema. Ganyan nga tayong mga mommy. Cooking is not one of my favourite things to do, but if it’s for my child, I’d gladly do it.

RalphT, tara na kain na tayo. 🙂

Thank you for the kind words, sesame. When I was his age and about to enter college, I thought I knew what I wanted to be but the people around me kept me confused telling me to do this and that. But in the end, I followed my heart. So now that I have my own children, I just want to support and encourage them.

    Aww, thanks, jun. 🙂

Hsin, time really flies. Seeing them grow up each year makes me feel older. I also remember my mother would worry about the choices I made back then. I think it’s what we mothers do best. 🙂

Thanks for the comment on my attempt at cooking. It’s been our tradition to have even a simple feast for the kids birthday and although we are kind of tight right now, we can’t let his birthday go without having a simple celebration.

Thanks, Wil. I also suggested to him to have a back up. I think he would like to teach music as well.

Thank you, haze. Yun na nga ang gift ko sa kanya eh, the feast that I prepared. But if that was my middle son, he wouldn’t consider that as a gift and would insist for something that he could play with. 🙂

Thanks, aurea. I also think that we should encourage children to pursue what they love. I’ve seen many a friends and classmates regret the courses they took in college because they were pushed by their parents and it was not what they really wanted.

Thank you, ann. I could have used your catering services. Siguradong mas masarap. I’m sure that you would have given me a discount. Hanggang ngayon masakit pa ang paa at likod ko dahil sa pag-prepare ng pagkain. 🙂

I wish I had been there for the Jazzman’s birthday!

Anyway, I’m sure he’ll be touring one of these days and catch him on his future brithday 🙂

What a spread! Everything looks so delicious!

Hmmm .. he does seem to project that quiet disposition about him. As my other brothers would tease our eldest brother with a similar demeanor as your Reggie, “Tahimik, ngunit mapanghi!” Whatever that means 🙂

Congratulations, to you, too, Irene for having brought up a fine artist.

Thanks Sidney. My boys got their looks from their father. 🙂

Sure, ralphT. Bakit naman hindi? 🙂

Gypsy, even now that I’m married, I still appreciate my mother. 🙂

Masyado ka namang nagpapabata cruise. I’m sure your time will come too, sooner or later.

Thank you so kindly Eric. I also hope that he succeeds in whatever he intends to do in the future. I know what mapanghi means. Pero ano naman ang kinalaman nuon sa pagiging tahimik. 🙂 Siblings can be really mean to each other, ano?

    HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY to Reggie!!!

It surely reminds me of how my 17th birthday celebration was — simple and sweet … Hehe.

And yes, time flies, really fast this time and the year end is approaching soon.

All the best to Reggie and his dreams to be a Jazz Flutist. I am sure he’ll excel knowing what he wants to do in life and what his passions are!

Happy Happy Birthday to Reggie and may all your dreams come true!

Niceheart, you’re so sweet and the food all looks so good!

My Dad didn’t like it at all when I took up music in college but he changed his mind and gave me his full support.

You’re a great mom Niceheart! Naku… binata na si Reggie! 🙂

Thanks, Kyels. Your 17th birthday must have been not too long ago. Can’t remember mine anymore. 🙂 I also wish the best not just for Reggie, but to all my kids. I want them to succeed in whatever they end up doing.

Thank you, DR. Yes, I am proud of all my kids. I think all mothers are. 🙂

Thank you so kindly Toe. May binata na nga ako. Makes me feel old. 😦
