My reading notes

July 29, 2009

Chapter 1 – The Other Minister

Cornelius Fudge revealed the magic world to the Muggle Prime Minister. Fudge told the Minister that the magic people are involved in the bridge collapsing, the hurricane and killings that are happening in the Muggle world.

Amelia Bones – Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement; was murdered (by Voldemort?)

Emmeline Vance – also murdered; a member of the Order of the Phoenix

Rufus Scrimgeour – replacing Fudge as Minister for Magic; looks like an old lion. There were streaks of grey in his mane of tawny hair and his bushy eyebrows. He had keen yellowish eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed spectables and a certain rangy, loping grace though he walked with a slight limp. There was an immediate impression of shrewdness and toughness.

Kingsley Shacklebolt – an Auror; works for the Prime Minister.

Herbert Chorley – one of the Junior Ministers.

Chapter 2 – Spinner’s End

Spinner’s End – the street where Severus Snape lived. Narcissa (Lucius Malfoy’s wife) and her sister
Bellatrix Lestrange (Sirius’ cousin who killed him) visited Snape. Snape has been working with both Dumbledore and Voldemort. Snape is spying on Dumbledore and reporting his actions to Voldemort. Dumbledore trusts Snape, though.

The Dark Lord has chosen Draco to do something for him, and if he fails, Snape is to do it in the end.
Narcissa asked Snape to look after and protect Draco. She asked Snape to make the Unbreakable Vow. That means Snape will watch over Draco as he attempts to fulfill the Dark Lord’s wishes, and will, to the best of his ability, protect him from harm, and should it prove necessary, if it seems Draco will fail, Snape will carry out the deed that the Dark Lord has ordered Draco to perform. (The deed is to kill Dumbledore.) pages 40-41.

Chapter 3 – Will and Won’t

Rufus Scrimgeour – previous Head of the Auror Office in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement; succeeded Cornelius Fudge as Minister for Magic.

Albus Dumbledore – newly reinstated Chief Warlock of the Winzengamot.

Augusta Longbottom – Neville’s grandmother.

Harry noticed that Dumbledore’s hand was blackened and shrivelled. It looked as though his flesh had been burned away.

Dumbledore went to Privet Drive to escort Harry to the Burrows, and on the way there, accompany him on an errand.

In his will, Sirius left everything he owned to Harry, including:
- Number 12, Grimmauld Place – has been vacated by the Order of the Phoenix since Bellatrix, who is Sirius’ cousin, might have claim to it.
- Kreacher – Harry told him to work in the kitchens of Hogwarts.
- Buckbeak – the Hippogriff – is to stay with Hagrid.

Witherwings – Buckbeak’s new name.

Chapter 4 – Horace Slughorn

Budleigh Babberton – village where Horace Slughorn lives. Dumbledore went there with Harry to convince him to return to Hogwarts.

Raspberry – Dumbledore’s favourite flavour of jam.

Inferi – dead bodies that have been bewitched to do a Dark wizard’s bidding.

Horace Slughorn – a fat bald old man, prominent eyes, enormous silver walrus-like moustache; an old friend and colleague of Dumbledore.

Slughorn and Dumbledore talked about being old, retirement, and being slower.

Harry noticed a ring on Dumbledore’s uninjured hand. It was large, rather clumsily made of what looked like gold, set with a heavy black stone that had cracked down the middle.

Slughorn’s precautions against intruders:
Intruder Charm, Freezing Charm

Dumbledore offered a teaching position to Slughorn. He said no at first, but after talking to Harry, he said yes.

Lily Evans – one of Slughorn’s all time favourite students; Harry’s mother.

Slughorn was Head of Slytherin.

He mentioned some of the famous and successful Muggle-born witches and wizards. Harry told him that one of his bestfriends is Muggle-born.

Dumbledore told Harry how Slughorn likes the company of the famous, the successful and the powerful, but now he prefers the backseat.

The Chosen One – this is how they refer to Harry now. It used to be The Boy Who Lived.

Dumbledore told Harry that he will be taking private lessons with him.

Chapter 5 – An Excess of Phlegm

Mr. Weasley has been promoted as Head of the Office for the Detection and Confiscation of Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective Objects.

Mr. Weasley’s dearest ambition – to find out how aeroplanes stay up.

Mollywobbles – what Mrs. Weasley likes Mr. Weasley to call her when they’re alone.

Fred and George’s joke shop is doing really good. Mrs. Weasley says they have a bit of flair for business.

Fleur Delacour – is engaged to Bill Weasley.

Phlegm – what the girls call Fleur. They don’t like her.

Tonks – is also Sirius’ cousin.

Harry told Ron and Hermione what the prophecy says. Dumbledore encouraged him to tell his two bestfriends. (He probably anticipated that Harry would need their help when it came time to do his mission to find out how to kill Voldemort.)

Harry was touched by how supportive Ron and Hermione were to him when he told them about the prophecy, instead of shrinking from him as though he were contaminated.

Fleur’s working part-time at Gringotts to practice her English.

The Healer’s Helpmate – the book Mrs. Weasley used to try to fix Hermione’s black eye that she got from Fred and George’s punching telescope.

OWLs’ results:
Harry – 7 OWLs, O in DADA, failed in Divination and History of Magic.
Ron – 7 OWLs, no Outstandings, also failed Divination and History of Magic.
Hermione – 10 Outstandings and 1 Exceeds Expectations.

Harry regrets not getting an O in Potions. This means the end of his ambition to become an Auror. (Well, so he thought.)

Igor Karkaroff’s body was found in a shack.

Florean Fortescue (ice cream vendor) and Ollivander (wandmaker) of Diagon Alley were gone too.

Chapter 6 – Draco’s Detour

Harry celebrated his 16th birthday at the Burrows.

Harry’s been made Quidditch captain.

Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes – Fred and George’s joke shop.

Some of their merchandise:
U-NO-POO, Skiving Snackboxes, Nosebleed Nougat, Reusable Hangman, Edible Dark Marks, Instant Darkness Powder, Wonderwitch products, Guaranteed Ten-Second Pimple Vanisher, trick wands, quills (self-inking, spell-checking, smart answer), Patented Daydream Charms, Shield Hats, Shield Cloaks, Shield Gloves, Decoy Detonators, Pygmy Puffs.

Verity – Fred and George’s helper at the joke shop.

Knockturn Alley – the side street devoted to the Dark Arts.

Borgin and Burkes – sold a wide variety of sinister objects.

Mr. Borgin – proprietor of the shop; an oily-haired, stooping man.

The trio overheard Draco asked Mr. Borgin how to fix something (the vanishing cabinets) and also reserved something from the store (the cursed opal).

Chapter 7 – The Slug Club

Arnold – the name of Ginny’s new purple Pygmy Puff.

Harry got sort of annoyed when Ginny refused to find a compartment with him at the train. She was meeting Dean. He got so used to her presence over the summer when he was staying at the Burrows.

Spectrespecs – made Luna look like a demented, multi-coloured owl.

Wrackspurt – They’re invisible; they float through your ears and make your brains go fuzzy.

(In the movie, it was Luna who rescued Harry from Malfoy’s compartment in the train. She said she saw wrackspurts above the invisible Harry while she was wearing the spectrespecs and that’s how she found him. )

Petrificus Totalus – spell Malfoy used on Harry when he found Harry hiding under the Invisibility Cloak in his compartment.

The Slug Club – Slughorn invited these students for dinner:
Harry, Neville, Blaise Zabini, Cormac Mclaggen, Marcus Belby

Anapneo – spell Slughorn used to help the choking Belby.

Damocles Belby – Marcus’ uncle; invented the Wolfsbane Potion.

Bag Bogey Hex – Ginny used this on Zacharias Smith.

Chapter 8 – Snape Victorious

Tonks – rescued Harry from the train.

Episkey – Tonks used this spell to fix Harry’s nose.

Wotcher, Harry – Tonks’ greetings to Harry.

Hogsmeade Station – where the Hogwarts Express stops and from there students travel by carriage to Hogwarts.

Tonks sent a Patronus to bring a message to Hogwarts that Harry was coming.

Tergeo – Hermione used this spell to clean off the dried blood on Harry’s face.

Dumbledore announced that Slughorn will be teaching Potions, and Snape, DADA.

Chapter 9 – The Half-Blood Prince

Prof. McGonagall told Harry that he could continue taking Potions since Prof. Slughorn is accepting students with Exceeds Expectations at OWL.

Protego – the Shield Charm.

Page 171. (I like this exchange between Harry and Snape in his DADA class.)

’Yes, ’ said Harry stiffly.
’Yes, sir, ’ (Snape)
’There ’s no need to call me “sir, “ Professor. ’ ( Ha ha ha!)

Acid Pops – password to Dumbledore’s office.

They were studying non-verbal spells in Snape’s class.

Advanced Potion-Making by Libatius Borage – their textbook in Potions class.

Veritaserum – a colourless, odourless potion that forces the drinker to tell the truth.

Polyjuice Potion – a slow-bubbling, mud-like substance.

Amortentia – the most powerful love potion in the world.

Hector Dagworth Granger – founded the Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers; not related to Hermione.

Felix Felicis – liquid luck. It makes you lucky. The colour of molten gold.

Draught of Living Death – Prof. Slughorn asked the class to prepare it and the person who does best will win a vial of Felix Felicis; a smooth, blackcurrant-coloured liquid.

Harry won the bottle of Felix Felicis by following the handwritten instructions of his Potions book that Slughorn let him use. This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince.

Harry noticed the flowery smell he had picked up in Slughorn’s Dungeon when Ginny joined them at dinner. (Did she use love potion or was it because she was just in Potions class?) Ginny warned Harry about taking orders from the Half-Blood Prince. She reminded him of Riddle’s diary. Harry told her that it’s not like that.

Chapter 10 – The House of Gaunt

Hermione pointed out to Harry that the Half-Blood Prince could be a her.

Harry went to his first private lesson with Dumbledore. The professor wanted Harry to know what prompted
Voldemort to try and kill him 15 years ago. Dumbledore said that it has something to do with the prophecy and he hoped that it will help Harry survive.

They visited Bob Ogden’s memory through the Pensieve.

Bob Ogden – worked for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement; a short, plump man wearing enormously thick glasses.

Little Hangleton – the village where the Gaunts lived.

The Gaunts – speak Parseltongue:

Marvolo Gaunt – the father
Morfin Gaunt – the son
Merope Gaunt – the daughter

Ogden visited the Gaunts because Morfin performed magic in front of a Muggle the previous night. (Didn’t this happen to Harry, too?) Morfin performed a jinx on Tom, causing him to erupt in highly painful hives. Merope liked the handsome Tom Riddle Senior. She must have used a love potion to make Tom fall in love with her. But when the potion wore off, he left her even though she was pregnant. Tom Riddle Jr grew up in an orphanage. (This memory didn’t make it to the movie.)

When Marvolo asked Ogden if he was pure blood, he said, ’That ’s neither here nor there. ’ And Harry felt his respect for Ogden rise.

The Gaunts are pure-blooded descendants of Salazar Slytherin.

Merope was a Squib.

Relashio – spell Ogden used to throw Marvolo backwards when he tried to choke his daughter.

Morfin and Marvolo were sent to Azkaban.

Marvolo Gaunt is Voldemort’s grandfather.

Merope is Voldemort’s mother.

Harry noticed the ugly, black stoned ring that Gaunt was wearing on his middle finger. The Peverell coat of arms was engraved on the stone. This is the same ring that Dumbledore’s wearing, the black stone now cracked, acquired it at the time he injured his hand.

Chapter 11 – Hermione’s Helping Hand

Page 206. Hermione told Harry that the reason his Quidditch team has become popular all of a sudden is because of him:

“You’ve never been more interesting, and frankly, you’ve never been more fanciable!” Ron gagged on a large piece of kipper. (Ha ha ha!)

She also added that everyone now knows that he’s telling the truth and that he really fought Voldemort twice in the last two years. They call him “The Chosen One.” It also helps that he’s grown a foot over the summer.

Harry’s new copy of Advanced Potion-Making came but he just swapped the covers of the old and new books. He wanted to continue using the Half-Blood Prince’s book. Hermione strongly disapproves.

Diffindo – spell Harry used that made the covers fall off.

Reparo – spell he used to swap the covers.

Stan Shunpike – conductor of the Knight Bus; was arrested on suspicion of Death Eater activity.

Hannah Abbott’s mother – had been found dead.

Lavender Brown – gave Ron a wide smile and Ron blinked at her.

Harry’s Quidditch team:
Seeker/Captain : Harry Potter
Chasers: Katie Bell, Demelza Robins, Ginny Weasley
Beaters: Jimmy Peakes, Richie Coote
Keeper: Ron Weasley

Cormac McLaggen – came close to winning the Keeper position, but looks like Hermione Confunded him during his try-outs

Harry, Ron and Hermione didn’t carry on with Care for Magical Creatures which Hagrid teaches and Hagrid was quite disappointed about it.

Aragog – is sick and Hagrid thinks he’s dying.

Harry got distracted while he was talking to Ron and Hermione and he watched Ginny play with Arnold the Pygmy Puff.

Ron’s in a bad mood because both Harry and Hermione was invited to Slughorn’s dinner and he was not.

Chapter 12 – Silver and Opals

The Half-Blood Prince’s Potion book does not only contain handy hints and shortcuts to potions, but also imaginative little jinxes and hexes that Harry thinks the Prince had invented himself.

Mulfiatto – the spell that filled the ears of anyone nearby with an unidentifiable buzzing, so that lengthy conversations could be held in class without being overheard.

Levicorpus – the spell to make someone dangle upside-down in mid-air.

Liberacorpus – the counterjinx.

Harry remembered that his dad used the Levicorpus on Snape when he saw Snape’s worst memory in the Pensieve. For a while, he thought that maybe his father was the Half-Blood Prince. But he soon remembered that his father was pure-blood.

When Ginny handed Harry Dumbledore’s message about his next lesson, he asked her if she’d like to join him, Ron and Hermione at Hogsmeade. But Ginny’s already going with Dean.

Filch checked everybody going to Hogsmeade with the Secrecy Sensor.

The trio saw Mundungus at the Three Broomsticks and when his suitcase burst open, Harry noticed a silver goblet that he saw at Sirius’ house. Mundungus has been stealing Sirius’ stuff, which are not Harry’s.
Harry’s disappointed that they didn’t see Ginny at Hogsmeade.

Katie Bell had gone to the bathroom of the Three Broomsticks and came out with a parcel. Her friend Leanne argued with her about bringing the parcel to Hogwarts. The parcel tore open and when Katie touched the necklace, she rose up in the air and started screaming, and she collapsed. Harry thinks that Malfoy bought the cursed necklace from Borgin and Burkes and gave the necklace to Katie to deliver it to someone he wants to hurt at Hogwarts. Harry thinks that Malfoy is a Death Eater. (And he was right, wasn’t he?)

Chapter 13 – The Secret Riddle

Katie Bell has been sent to St. Mungo’s Hospital.

Dilligrout – password to the Fat Lady.

Caractacus Burke – one of the founders of Borgin and Burke.

Harry’s second lesson with Dumbledore – They entered Dumbledore’s memory ; when he first met Tom Riddle at the orphanage and invited him to Hogwarts. Dumbledore told Tom that what he could do was magic.
Mrs. Cole – the matron at the orphanage.

Dumbledore pointed out to Harry these things about Tom Riddle:
- That his powers were surprisingly well-developed for a young wizard (11 years old).
- He was using magic to frighten, punish and control.
- He showed contempt for anything that tied him to other people and anything that made him ordinary.
- He was already highly self-sufficient, secretive and friendless.
- He liked to collect trophies, stolen articles which were taken from victims of his bullying behaviour (the idea for horcruxes?)

Harry noticed that:
- Tom Riddle believed it much quicker than he did (that he was a wizard). Harry didn’t believe Hagrid at first.
- Tom was a Parselmouth.

Chapter 14 – Felix Felicis

Gwenog Jones – Captain of the Holyhead Harpies. Slughorn introduced her to the Slug Club. Hermione was invited at this dinner. So far, Harry’s avoided meeting Slughorn.

Hermione said that Slughorn is planning a Christmas party for the Slug Club. Ron was annoyed and told Hermione to enjoy the party and maybe she should try getting off with Mclaggen. She told him he was actually going to ask Ron to come as her guest. Hermione was flustered, and Ron looked sheepish, but also rather pleased with himself.

Harry replaced Katie with Dean Thomas.

Ron and Harry walked into Dean and Ginny kissing. (page 268) It was as though something large and scaly erupted into life in Harry’s stomach, clawing at his insides; hot blood seemed to flood his brain, so that all thought was extinguished, replaced by a savage urge to jinx Dean into a jelly.

It’s just because she’s Ron’s sister, he told himself. You just didn’t like seeing her kissing Dean because she’s Ron’s sister.

Harry had an image of that same corridor with himself kissing Ginny instead.

She’s Ron’s sister. Ron’s sister. She’s out of bounds. He would not risk his friendship with Ron for anything. (page 271)

Harry pretended to spike Rons’ pumpkin juice with Felix Felicis so he would feel lucky and give him confidence. And it worked, because Gryffindor won against Slytherin. Also Malfoy was sick and didn’t play.

Harper – replaced Malfoy.

Urquhart – the new Slytherin Captain.

Zacharias Smith – the new commentator, succeeding Lee Jordan.

Harry couldn’t see how he could explain to Hermione that the reason she’s offended Ron was kissing Viktor Krum, when it happened so long ago.

Oppugno – spell Hermione used to make the yellow birds that she conjured out of mid-air to attack Ron. She got jealous when she saw Ron kissing Lavender Brown.

Chapter 15 – The Unbreakable Vow

Hermione told Harry to watch out since the girls were trying to slip him a love potion, especially Romilda Vane, so he would ask them to Slughorn’s Christmas party.

Baubles – new password to the Fat Lady.

Luna was demonstrating her usual knack of speaking uncomfortable truths; he (Harry) had never met anyone quite like her.

Eldred Worple – an old student of Slughorn, author of Blood Brothers: My Life Amongst the Vampires.

Harry asked Luna to come with him to Slughorn’s party, just as friends.

When Luna heard Harry say that he wanted to be an Auror, she said that Aurors are part of the Rot-fang Conspiracy. They’re working from within to bring down the Ministry of Magic using a combination of Dark Magic and gum disease.

Harry heard Snape and Malfoy talking about the Unbreakable Vow and how Draco’s working for “him.” And how Snape wants to help Malfoy so he won’t make mistakes.

Chapter 16 – A Very Frosty Christmas

Harry spent the Christmas holidays at the Burrows. Bill and Fleur were also there.

Celestina Warbeck – Mrs. Weasley’s favourite singer. Fleur doesn’t like Celestina.

“A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love” – a jazzy song by Celestina

“You Charmed the Heart Right Out of Me” – a balland by Celestina

Harry told Ron, Mr. Weasley and Lupin that he overheard Snape and Malfoy. They all thought that was just pretending to offer help so Snape could find out what Malfoy’s up to.

Dumbledore trusts Snape and Lupin trusts him too, although they could never be bosom friends. The year that Lupin taught at Hogwarts, Snape made Wolfsbane Potion for him every month so that he didn’t have to suffer as he usually does at the full moon.

Lupin has been living with werewolves. The werewolves are on Voldemort’s side. And Lupin is Dumbledore’s spy.

Fenrir Greyback – the most savage werewolf alive today. It is his mission in life to bite and contaminate as many people as possible. It was Greyback who bit Lupin. (page 313)

Lavender sent Ron a gold necklace wtih the words “My Sweetheart.” Ron was revolted.

Kreacher sent Harry a package of maggots.

When Ginny picked a maggot out of Harry’s hair, he felt goosebumps.

Mrs. Weasley gave everybody new sweaters except Fleur.

Mrs. Weasley invited Tonks but she wouldn’t come. She wishes it was Tonks who Bill is marrying and not Fleur.

Harry asked Lupin what could be the reason Tonks’ Patronus changed form. Lupin said it is sometimes caused by a great shock, an emotional upheaval. Harry thinks that Tonks is deeply saddened by her cousin Sirius’ death.

Percy came with Rufus Scrimgeour, the new Minister for Magic.

Scrimgeour led Harry outside to talk to him. He wanted Harry to show support to the Ministry, but Harry declined.

Chapter 17 – A Sluggish Memory

Harry, Ron and Ginny went back to Hogwarts through the Floo Network.

Abstinence – new password to the Fat Lady.

Won-won – Lavender’s pet name for Ron.

Hermione still won’t talk to Ron.

Apparition lessons – are being offered to students 17 years of age or will turn 17 on or before August 31. It is a 12-week course to be learned from a Ministry of Magic Apparition Instructor. Cost 12 galleons.

Harry told Dumbledore about Snape and Malfoy but Dumbledore wasn’t concerned about it, although he thanked Harry for telling him.

His next private lesson with Dumbledore – The first memory, they visited Morfin’s memory. The teen-aged Voldemort visited Morfin. He found out who his father was and he killed him and also his grandparents. Tom fixed Morfin’s memory so Morfin thought that he was the murdered. Voldemort also stole Marvolo’s ring. (This memory didn’t make it to the movie.)

The second memory they visited was Slughorn’s. But Dumbledore told Harry that it has been tampered with. Voldemort has asked Slughorn about Horcruxes but he didn’t get any answers. Dumbledore asked Harry to get that information from Slughorn.

Chapter 18 – Birthday Surprises

Harry and the sixth years are learning how to create antidotes in Potions but the Prince didn’t have any notes on this lesson. Harry started to get worried but then he saw this line: ‘Just shove bezoar down their throats.” Then he remembered his first ever Potions lesson with Snape: “Bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat, which will protect from most poisons.”

He went to the cupboard, took one, and showed it to Slughorn at the end of class. Slughorn was impressed at his cheekiness.

Harry asked Slughorn about Horcruxes, but he wouldn’t tell him anything and he wasn’t happy about Harry asking.

Hermione also couldn’t find anything about horcruxes in the library.

First Apparition lesson – was on a Saturday morning at the Great Hall.

Wilkie Twycross – Ministry Apparition Instructor.

The Heads of Houses were present:
McGonagall (Gryffindor), Snape (Slytherin), Flitwick (Ravenclaw), Sprout (Hufflepuff)

The three Ds in Apparating:
Step 1. Destination – Fix your mind firmly upon the desired Destination.
Step 2. Determination – Focus your determination to occupy the visualized space.
Step 3. Deliberation – Turn on the spot, feeling your way into nothingness, moving with deliberation.

Splinching – or the separation of random body parts.

Susan Bones – splinched.

On Ron’s birthday (March 1) – he took by mistake the Chocolate Cauldrons that Romilda Vane gave Harry before Christmas. And they’re all spiked with love potion. Now Ron’s in love with Romilda Vane. Harry brought him to Slughorn to make him an antidote. When Slughorn gave Ron oak-matured mead that he meant to give to Dumbledore for Christmas, Ron started foaming in the mouth and twitching. Harry acted quickly, found a bezoar in Slughorn’s kit and dropped it in Ron’s mouth.

Chapter 19 – Elf Trails

Essence of Rue – what Madam Pomfrey’s treating Ron with.

Ron called out Hermione’s name (Er-my-nee) while he was asleep in the hospital wing.

The Gryffindor team is playing against Hufflepuff. Harry’s replaced Ron with Mclaggen as Keeper.

Luna was commentating. (Imagine how hilarious that had been.)

Mclaggen’s irritating Harry because he keeps giving instructions to the players. Harry has to remind him who’s the Captain.

Mclaggen accidentally hit Harry with the Bludger and cracked his skull. Harry ended up in the hospital wing.
Gryffindor lost to Hufflepuff. 320 to 60.

Ginny visited while Harry was unconscious.

Harry called Kreacher and told him to follow Malfoy and report his actions to him. (He had been following Malfoy, but now he’s ill.)

Kreacher and Dobby were fighting because Kreacher insulted Harry.

Langlock – spell Harry used to glue Peeves’ tongue to the roof of his mouth.

Muffliato – spell Harry used on Madam Pomfrey’s office door so she wouldn’t hear any noise.

Chapter 20 – Lord Voldemort’s Request

Hermione’s talking to Ron again.

Dean and Ginny had a row and Harry kept asking Hermione about them. She started to get suspicious of Harry.

Gurdyroot – looks like a green onion, excellent for warding off Gulping Pimples.

Tom Riddle’s first job was at Borgin and Burkes.

He wanted to teach DADA at Hogwarts but Prof. Armando Dippet thought that he was too young at 18.

Galatin Merrythought – DADA professor during Riddle’s time.

Harry and Dumbledore visited Hokey’s memory.

Hokey – the house-elf who worked for a very old, very rich witch by the name of Hepzibah Smith.

When the young Tom visited her, Hepzibah showed him two of her finest treasures:
1. Helga Hufflepuff’s golden cup with two finely wrought handles, a badger engraved on it.
2. A heavy golden locket, Slytherin’s mark, an ornate serpentine S.

Hepzibah Smith died two days after that visit, her treasures gone, and Hokey was convicted of poisoning her. Hokey’s memory has been modified by Tom. This time he killed not for revenge, but for gain.
Harry and Dumbledore visited Dumbledore’s memory. This is ten years later when Voldemort visited Dumbledore at Hogwarts asking for the DADA teaching position. But Dumbledore declined his request.

Voldemort to Dumbledore: “ Greatness inspires envy, envy engenders spite, spite spawns lies… But nothing I have seen in the world has supported your famous pronouncements that love is more powerful than my kind of magic, Dumbledore.”

“Perhaps you have been looking in the wrong places,” suggested Dumbledore. (page 415)

(These two memories were not in the movie.)

Chapter 21 – The Unknowable Room

Sectumsempra – an incantation Harry found in his Potions book above the intriguing words “For Enemies.”

When Hermione fixed the spellings on Ron’s essay, he said, “I love you, Hermione.” Hermione turned faintly pink, but just said, “Don’t let Lavender hear you saying that.” Ron was hoping that Lavender would ditch him, but he wouldn’t break up with her. (page 421)

Roonil Wazlib – how Ron wrote his name on his essay when the Spell-checking quill`s charm he was using started to wear off. This is also the name he wrote on his Potions book.

Kreacher and Dobby Apparated in the Common Room to report about Malfoy. Dobby said that Malfoy`s not breaking any rules but making regular visits to the 7th Floor with a variety of students. Harry figured out that it must be Crabbe and Goyle using Polyjuice Potion to make them look like other people, even girls. And Malfoy must be going to the Room of Requirement which is not on the Marauder`s Map.

Ron gave Snape a smart-ass answer when he tried to defend Harry`s answer regarding the differences between ghosts and Inferi. I thought that was funny, but also didn`t make it to the movie. (page 431)

Myrtle told Harry and Ron that a boy has been coming to see her in the boys` bathroom.

Harry saw Tonks on the 7th Floor while he was trying to make the door of the Room of Requirement appear so that he could find out what Malfoy`s up to. She looked terrible, thinner than usual and her mouse-coloured hair lank. She was looking for Dumbledore. And when Harry mentioned Sirius, she looked like she was going to cry.

Harry thought that maybe Tonks was in love with Sirius.

Ron has finally Apparated successfully when he was practicing with the 6th years at Hogsmeade.

Chapter 22 – After the Burial

Ron and Hermione took the Apparition test. Hermione passed but Ron failed. Harry`s still too young to take it. He has to wait until he`s 17.

Harry has been saving his Felix Felicis to get lucky with Ginny. But he took some of it to get lucky in getting the memory from Slughorn. Dumbledore told him they won`t be having any more lessons until he gets that memory. When he went down to Hagrid`s hut that night to help him bury Aragog, he bumped into Slughorn at the vegetable patch. Slughorn also came to the burial because he wanted to get its venom. He came with wine, got Hagrid and himself drunk. And Harry coaxed him to give him the memory by telling Slughorn how his father and mother died in the hands of Voldemort. Because, as we already know, Slughorn liked Lily.

Chapter 23 – Horcruxes

Tapeworm – new password to the Fat Lady.

Toffee éclairs – password to Dumbledore`s gargoyle.

Harry and Dumbledore revisited Slughorn`s memory. They found out about the horcrux.

Horcrux – the word used for an object in which a person had concealed part of their soul. Then, even if one`s body is attacked or destroyed, one cannot die, for part of the soul remains earthbound and undamaged. (page 464) It has to be an object that has a certain grandeur. (page 472)

How do you split a soul? – By killing

Why seven horcruxes? Seven is the most powerfully magical number.

(Horcrux no. 1) Riddle’s diary – one of the horcruxes. It gave instructions on how to re-open the Chamber of Secrets. It possessed Ginny and Harry destroyed it with the Basilisk fang. The diary was just a simple object but it proved that Voldemort was the heir of Slytherin.

(Horcrux no. 7) The seventh part of his soul resides in his regenerated body. (page 470)

(Horcrux no. 2) Marvolo’s ring – Dumbledore found it hidden in the ruin of the Gaunts’ house and Dumbledore destroyed it, also did so his hand.

(Horcrux no. 3) Slytherin’s locket.

(Horcrux no. 4) Hufflepuff’s cup.

(Horcrux no. 5) Dumbledore thinks that it is an object owned by Gryffindor or Ravenclaw.

Gryffindor’s sword – Gryffindor’s only known relic and it remains safe at Dumbledore’s office. He used this to destroy Marvolo’s ring (and Ron also used this to destroy Slytherin’s locket in Book 7)

(Horcrux no. 6) Nagini, the snake, could be the sixth horcrux.

Dumbledore thinks that if all the horcruxes are destroyed, Voldemort could be killed. Voldemort will be a mortal man with a maimed and diminished soul. It will take uncommon skill and power (Harry’s ability to love) to kill a wizard like Voldemort, even without his horcruxes.

If Voldemort had not heard the prophecy, it would not have been fulfilled. His greatest mistake was that he acted upon it, and by trying to kill Harry, he not only transferred some of his powers to him, but Harry has been able to hear and see his thoughts. And yet Harry has not been seduced by the Dark Arts because he was protected by his ability to love. (pages 476-477)

Chapter 24 – Sectumsempra

Ron and Lavender broke up.

So did Ginny and Dean. Harry thought there was another knowing look in Hermione’s eye as she told him. His insides were suddenly dancing the conga.

Katie Bell’s back from St. Mungo’s and back in the Quidditch team as well. Harry had to drop Dean, but Ginny didn’t seem upset. She was actually the life and soul of the team.

Harry found Malfoy crying to Moaning Myrtle in the boy’s bathroom. (It’s very interesting to see Malfoy’s vulnerable side. All this time, we saw him as this bully, but there he is now, crying to a girl.)

When Malfoy saw Harry, he tried to use the Cruciatus curse at him, but Harry quickly said Sectumsempra. Blood spurted from Malfoy’s face and chest. Myrtle screamed Murder and Snape came and tried to fix Malfoy. Snape knew where Harry had learned the spell and asked for his Potions book. But he hid his book in the Room of Requirement and gave Ron’s book to Snape in its place. Snape gave Harry detention every Saturday until end of term. That meant he couldn’t play Quidditch, the final match that will determine the winner of the Cup. He replaced himself with Ginny as Seeker and Dean is back as Chaser.

After his detention with Snape, he went back to the Gryffindor tower. He found out that they won against Ravenclaw, 450-140. Ginny came running towards him with a hard blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. Then Harry kissed her. He sought Ron’s eyes and he understood his approval.

Chapter 25 – The Seer Overheard

Ginny said that Romilda Vane has asked her if it’s true that Harry’s got a Hippogriff tattoed across his chest. Ron and Hermione both roared with laughter.

What did you tell her? Harry asked.

I told her it’s a Hungarian Horntail. Much more macho. Ginny said.

Thanks, said Harry. And what did you tell her Ron’s got?

A pygmy puff, but I didn’t say where, said Ginny.

Ron scowled as Hermione rolled around laughing. (I thought this was so funny.)

Harry found out from Trelawney that it was Snape who overheard her prophecy at the Hog’s Head. Harry was so mad. Because it was Snape, then, who told Voldemort to go after his parents. But Dumbledore explained to Harry that Snape was still working for Voldemort then and he had no idea of the remorse Snape felt on how Voldemort interpreted the prophecy and Dumbledore thinks it’s the greatest regret of his life. (Because he loved Lily, as we found out in Book 7)

Harry took his Invisibility Cloak and gave Hermione and Ron the Marauder’s Map and Felix Felicis so they could watch Malfoy and Snape while he sets out with Dumbledore to find another horcrux.

Chapter 26 – The Cave

Dumbledore and Harry Disapparated from Hog’s Head and Apparated at a sea coast. They swam a little bit until they reached a cave. Dumbledore used his blood as payment to open the door. Once through, they saw a black lake and there was a small island that was emitting a phosphorescent light.
Dumbledore thinks that’s where the horcrux is. When Harry yelled Accio Horcrux, he saw a body jumped out of the water. They found a boat and crossed the lake. Dumbledore warned Harry not to touch the water.

“Voldemort’s mistake, Harry … age is foolish and forgetful when it underestimates youth.” (page 528)

“There is nothing to be feared from a body, Harry, anymore than there is anything to be feared from the darkness. Lord Voldemort, who of course secretly fears both, disagrees. But once again he reveals his own lack of wisdom. It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more.” (page 529)

In the middle of the lake is a basin filled with emerald liquid. Dumbledore started drinking the potion when none of his spells to make the liquid disappear worked. Before they left for the lake, Dumbledore made Harry promise to follow any of his commands. Before he drank the potion, he told Harry that even though it looks like the potion would kill him, that he should make sure that Dumbledore keeps on drinking until the basin is empty.

Pennervate – spell Harry used when he thought that Dumbledore was dying.

Aguamenti – spell Harry used to fill the goblet with water.

When the spell Aguamenti didn’t work, Harry went to scoop water from the lake. But once he touched the water, the Inferi came out of the lake and none of the spells he cast on them worked. When one of the Inferi lifted and carried him in the water, a ring of fire surrounded the island and the Inferi backed away. Dumbledore was now up on his feet. Dumbledore scooped the locket from the bottom of the stone basin.
He was still very weak and Harry led the way back and Disapparated them both.

Chapter 27 – The Lightning-Struck Tower

From Hogsmeade, they saw the Dark Mark over Hogwarts. They borrowed Madam Rosmerta’s broom and flew back to the castle.

When they reached the tower, Dumbledore told Harry to get Snape. Somebody shouted Expelliarmus and unarmed Dumbledore. At the same time, Harry became rigid and immobile under the Invisibility Cloak. Dumbledore wordlessly Immobilised Harry. It was Malfoy who disarmed Dumbledore. Malfoy explained that he used the Vanishing Cabinets, the other pair is at Borgin and Burkes, to allow the Death Eaters through Hogwarts. He also almost killed Katie Bell and Ron Weasley. Four Death Eaters and Fenrir Greyback came up to the tower while the others are fighting below. Malfoy was ordered by Voldemort to kill Dumbledore, but he has been hesitating all this time while Harry watched, invisible to everybody. Then Snape came and used the Avada Kedavra on Dumbledore.

Chapter 28 – The Flight of the Prince

Once Dumbledore died, Harry was able to move again. He tried to run after Malfoy and Snape. The two run towards the gates because they could only Disapparate beyond the gates of Hogwarts. One of the Death Eaters burned down Hagrid’s hut. When Harry caught up with Snape, he tried to use the Unforgivable Curses on him, but Snape kept blocking them off before he could complete them. He also tried Levicorpus and Sectumsempra, blocked off, too. Then Snape revealed that he is the Half-Blood Prince. Snape Disapparated as Buckbeak came after him.

Harry and Hagrid went back to the castle and they saw Dumbledore’s body at the foot of the Astronomy Tower. The body was surrounded by the students. Harry found the locket beside Dumbledore’s body and there was a letter inside addressed to the Dark Lord that revealed that it’s not Slytherin’s locket. It was a fake and a certain R.A.B. has already taken the real one. Harry thought that Dumbledore had weakened himself by drinking the potion and it wasn’t even a horcrux.

Chapter 29 – The Phoenix Lament

Bill was attacked by Fenrir Greyback, mangled his face, bit him. But since Greyback wasn’t transformed when he bit Bill, Lupin thinks that he won’t turn into a werewolf but he might have the characteristics of a werewolf.

Fleur said that she still loves Bill and will still marry him. Mrs. Weasley was touched and seemed to have softened up to Fleur. Then Tonks pointed out to Lupin how Fleur still wants to marry Bill even though he’s been bitten. But Lupin told her that it’s different. It became clear now that Tonks is in love with Lupin, and not Sirius.

Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder – Malfoy used this and everything went pitch black, so the members of the old DA lost him when he came out of the Room of Requirement. (In the movie, it was Harry who used this powder when they were at the train. He used it so he could hide under the Invisibility Cloak and sneak into Malfoy’s compartment.)

The phoenix which had been singing this magical song to lament the death of Dumbledore left Hogwarts for good.

Harry refused to tell McGonagall where he and Dumbledore had been since Dumbledore instructed him to follow his orders even if he died. Harry could never tell anyone except Ron and Hermione.

But Harry told McGonagall that Madam Rosmerta was under the Imperius Curse and was helping Malfoy and the Death Eaters.

Chapter 30 – The White Tomb

Eileen Prince – was captain of the Hogwarts Gobstones Team; Snape’s mother.

Tobias Snape – a muggle; Snape’s father.

Lots of people and creatures (giants, centaurs, etc) attended Dumbledore’s funeral. (This was not included in the movie.)

Harry broke it off with Ginny. Harry was afraid that Voldemort will try to get to him through Ginny.
“Ginny, listen. I can’t be involved with you anymore. We’ve got to stop seeing each other. We can’t be together.”

“It’s for some stupid noble reason, isn’t it?” (page 602)

Ginny: “ I never really gave up on you. I always hoped. Hermione told me to get on with my life. Maybe go out with some other people, relax a bit around you, because I never used to be able to talk if you were in the room, remember? And she thought you might take a bit more notice if I was a bit more myself.”

Harry: “Smart girl, that Hermione.” (page 603)
